Griha Pravesam is the ceremony of entering a new home for the first time. In Tamil tradition it marks the beginning of the household itself, so families treat the choice of day with care and usually fix it months ahead, well before the builder hands over the keys. The overview below is drawn directly from the Muhurtham engine used on this site, the same calculations of Nakshatra, Tithi, Yogam, and weekday that power the date finder tool.
Across all 12 months of 2027 the engine finds favorable windows, with a few months standing out as especially strong and a few offering relatively fewer top-tier days. Use this guide to understand the shape of the year, then confirm specific dates for your city with the date finder.

What Makes a Griha Pravesam Date Auspicious?
Entering a new home is a threshold moment, and the Muhurtham for it is chosen from the Panchangam, the Vedic almanac, which tracks five daily elements: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (the Moon's star), Yogam (the luni-solar combination), and Karanam (half-Tithi). Each element contributes to or detracts from the auspiciousness of a given day.
Key Factors in Muhurtham Selection
Nakshatra (Moon's Star)
For Griha Pravesam the engine treats Rohini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati as favorable Nakshatras. Bharani, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Mula are treated as unfavorable and count against a day.
Tithi (Lunar Day)
The engine penalises the 6th (Shashthi), 8th (Ashtami), 9th (Navami), and 14th (Chaturdashi) tithis of both the waxing and waning fortnights, along with Amavasai (new Moon). Pournami (full Moon) is not penalised. See the tithi guide for what each lunar day means.
Day of the Week
Tuesday and Saturday are avoided for Griha Pravesam and count against a day. The other weekdays are not penalised.
Rahu Kalam
Regardless of how favorable a date appears on the Panchangam, the entry into the home should not fall within the day's Rahu Kalam. These inauspicious daily periods shift with the sunrise of your location, which is one reason exact Muhurtham times differ by city.
Why your city matters: Every figure on this page is computed using Chennai's coordinates as a reference. Your actual Muhurtham windows will differ if your new home is in a different city, because sunrise and sunset times, and therefore Rahu Kalam boundaries, vary by location. Use the date finder tool to get results for your own city.
