About Vedic Astrology
What is Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology (called Jyotish in Sanskrit, or Jothidam in Tamil) is the traditional Indian system of astrology. It is one of the oldest astrological traditions in the world, with roots going back thousands of years. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac (aligned to actual star positions) and places primary importance on the Moon sign rather than the Sun sign. It also includes unique features like the 27-star Nakshatra system and the Dasha planetary period framework. For a deeper introduction, see What is Vedic Astrology?
How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?
The most significant differences are the zodiac system and the primary celestial body. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions), while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons). This means your Vedic sign is likely different from your Western sign by about one position. Vedic astrology also emphasizes the Moon over the Sun, uses 27 Nakshatras for finer personality detail, and employs Dasha periods for timing life events. For a full comparison, see Vedic vs Western Astrology.
Is Vedic astrology scientific?
Vedic astrology is not a science in the modern empirical sense. No astrology system has been validated by controlled scientific studies. It is best understood as a rich symbolic and cultural framework that millions of people around the world find meaningful for self-reflection, understanding relationships, and choosing timing for important events. Think of it as a detailed personality and timing framework, older and more intricate than modern systems like Myers-Briggs or the Enneagram.
Why is the Moon more important than the Sun in Vedic astrology?
The Moon moves through the entire zodiac in about 27 days, while the Sun takes a full year. This makes the Moon's position far more specific to your exact birth time. Two people born just a day apart can have different Moon signs, while their Sun sign stays the same for a month. The Moon governs the mind, emotions, and instincts, which Vedic astrology considers the core of individual identity and experience.
What is the difference between sidereal and tropical zodiac?
The sidereal zodiac is aligned to the actual positions of star constellations in the sky right now. The tropical zodiac is fixed to the Earth's seasons, with the spring equinox always defined as 0 degrees Aries, regardless of which constellation the Sun is actually in front of. Due to Earth's slow axial wobble (precession), these two systems have drifted apart by about 24 degrees over two thousand years, which is nearly one full zodiac sign.
Birth Charts and Nakshatras
What is my Moon sign (Rasi)?
Your Moon sign, or Rasi, is determined by which zodiac constellation the Moon occupied at your exact time and place of birth. It is your primary identity in Vedic astrology. You can find your Moon sign using the birth chart calculator on this site by entering your birth date, time, and location.
What is a Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, or star groups, that divide the zodiac into segments of 13 degrees and 20 minutes each. Your birth Nakshatra is determined by the Moon's exact position at the time of your birth and provides much more specific information than your Rasi alone. Nakshatras are used for personality analysis, marriage matching, traditional naming conventions, and calculating Dasha periods.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes, birth time is critically important in Vedic astrology. The Moon moves about half a degree per hour, so even a few hours' difference can change your Nakshatra. The Lagna (ascendant) rotates through all 12 signs in 24 hours, changing roughly every two hours. Without an accurate birth time, your chart may have significantly different placements from your actual configuration. If you do not know your exact birth time, check your birth certificate or hospital records.
What is a Dasha period?
A Dasha is a planetary period in the Vimshottari system, which is unique to Vedic astrology. It divides your life into chapters ruled by different planets, with the total cycle spanning 120 years. Each planet rules for a specific number of years: Sun for 6, Moon for 10, Mars for 7, Rahu for 18, Jupiter for 16, Saturn for 19, Mercury for 17, Ketu for 7, and Venus for 20. Your starting Dasha is determined by your birth Nakshatra. Learn more in Understanding Your Birth Chart.
Marriage Matching and Compatibility
How many poruthams should match for marriage?
Most astrologers recommend that at least 5 or 6 out of the 10 poruthams should match for a marriage to proceed. However, quality matters more than quantity. Rajju and Vedha are considered essential, and many practitioners will not proceed with a match if these two fail, even if all other eight poruthams are favorable. The overall assessment should weigh the importance of each porutham rather than simply counting matches.
Can I check marriage compatibility on this site?
Yes. The compatibility matching tool lets you enter birth details for two people and see all 10 poruthams evaluated, along with an overall compatibility score. The tool is completely free and all calculations run in your browser. Your data is not stored on any server.
Rahu Kalam and Auspicious Dates
What is Rahu Kalam?
Rahu Kalam is a daily period of approximately 90 minutes that is considered inauspicious in Tamil astrology. It is ruled by Rahu, the north node of the Moon. The timing shifts each day of the week and varies by your geographic location because it is calculated from sunrise and sunset times. Many people avoid starting new ventures, signing contracts, or beginning travel during Rahu Kalam. Learn more in What is Rahu Kalam?
How are auspicious dates scored?
Auspicious dates are evaluated based on the Panchangam elements for each day: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (Moon's star), Yogam (luni-solar combination), Karanam (half of a Tithi), and the day of the week. Additional factors include planetary transits, Rahu Kalam timing, and whether the date falls during a traditionally favorable or unfavorable period. You can explore daily scores using the auspicious dates tool.
