What Rajju Porutham Measures
Rajju Porutham is the cornerstone of the Tamil marriage compatibility system. It is believed to directly affect the longevity and well-being of the groom, and by extension, the safety and security of the entire family. The concept is based on a "rope" (Rajju) that maps the 27 Nakshatras onto five regions of the human body: the feet (Pada Rajju), the hip or waist (Kataka Rajju), the navel or middle (Udara Rajju), the neck (Kantha Rajju), and the head (Siro Rajju).
The fundamental rule is simple but strict: the bride and groom should not have their birth stars in the same Rajju (body segment). When both Nakshatras fall on the same segment, the marriage is believed to bring specific types of misfortune associated with that body part. For example, same Siro Rajju (head) is considered the most dangerous, traditionally associated with threats to the groom's life. Same Kantha Rajju (neck) is associated with the death of the wife. Same Udara Rajju relates to loss of children. These are extreme traditional interpretations, and modern practitioners often take a more nuanced view, but the gravity with which Rajju Porutham is treated reflects the depth of concern behind it.
How It Is Calculated
The 27 Nakshatras are distributed across the five Rajju segments in a specific repeating pattern. The assignment follows a sequence: stars 1, 10, 19 are Pada Rajju (feet). Stars 2, 11, 20 are Kataka Rajju (hip). Stars 3, 12, 21 are Udara Rajju (navel). Stars 4, 13, 22 are Kantha Rajju (neck). Stars 5, 14, 23 are Siro Rajju (head). Then the pattern reverses: stars 6, 15, 24 are Kantha Rajju. Stars 7, 16, 25 are Udara Rajju. Stars 8, 17, 26 are Kataka Rajju. Stars 9, 18, 27 are Pada Rajju.
The astrologer identifies which Rajju segment each person's Nakshatra belongs to. If the segments are different, Rajju Porutham is favorable. If they are the same, it is unfavorable. Some traditions recognize exceptions when the Nakshatras, while in the same Rajju, have certain other mitigating factors such as belonging to different Rasis or having beneficial Vedha exemptions.
What a Match vs. No Match Means
When Rajju Porutham is present (different Rajju segments), it is considered a green light for the marriage from the most critical perspective. The couple is believed to be protected from the specific dangers associated with same-Rajju pairings. When Rajju Porutham is absent (same Rajju), many traditional families will not proceed with the match regardless of how well other poruthams align. This reflects the seriousness with which Rajju is regarded. In modern practice, some astrologers look for exception conditions that may neutralize the Rajju dosha, but it remains the single most scrutinized compatibility factor.
How Important Is Rajju Porutham?
Rajju Porutham is universally considered the most important of the ten poruthams. It is the one compatibility factor that can single-handedly determine whether a match proceeds or is rejected. The saying "Rajju porutham illai endral, mattravai ellam veendum illai" (if Rajju does not match, the rest does not matter) is well known in Tamil astrology circles. While modern practitioners may interpret its implications less literally, its priority in the matching process remains unquestioned. If you are evaluating compatibility and can only check one porutham, Rajju is the one to check.
