What Gana Porutham Measures

Gana Porutham evaluates the innate temperament or disposition of each individual based on their Nakshatra. In Vedic astrology, the 27 Nakshatras are divided into three groups called Ganas. Deva Gana individuals tend to be gentle, spiritual, and diplomatic. Manushya Gana people are practical, balanced, and grounded in worldly concerns. Rakshasa Gana individuals are independent, strong-willed, and direct in their approach to life. None of these types is inherently better or worse; they simply reflect different natural dispositions.

This porutham matters because temperament shapes how people communicate, resolve conflicts, and share their daily lives. Two people with compatible Ganas tend to understand each other's reactions intuitively. When Ganas clash, misunderstandings can arise not from any specific disagreement but from fundamentally different ways of processing emotions and engaging with the world around them.

How It Is Calculated

Each of the 27 Nakshatras is assigned to one of the three Ganas. Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, and Revati are Deva Gana. Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada, and Uttara Bhadrapada are Manushya Gana. Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Moola, Dhanishta, and Shatabhisha are Rakshasa Gana.

The compatibility rules are straightforward. If both partners share the same Gana, it is a perfect match. Deva and Manushya are considered compatible. Manushya and Rakshasa have moderate compatibility. Deva and Rakshasa are considered the least compatible pairing, though some traditions consider this acceptable if the bride is Deva and the groom is Rakshasa.

What a Match vs. No Match Means

A favorable Gana Porutham suggests that the couple will share similar emotional wavelengths. They will likely agree on how to handle stress, celebrate joy, and approach daily decisions. When Gana Porutham is not favorable, it does not mean the relationship is doomed. It indicates that the couple may have fundamentally different temperaments and will need greater patience and understanding. Many happy marriages exist between mismatched Ganas, particularly when other poruthams are strong.

How Important Is Gana Porutham?

Gana Porutham is considered one of the more significant poruthams, ranking in the upper tier of importance. It directly affects the emotional atmosphere of the marriage. While it is not as critical as Rajju Porutham, many astrologers place great emphasis on Gana compatibility because temperament clashes can erode a relationship over time even when other factors are aligned.
