The 10 Poruthams

Porutham — also called Jathaka Porutham — is the traditional Tamil Vedic system for assessing compatibility between two people before marriage. It evaluates the couple's birth stars (Nakshatras) and Moon signs (Rasis) across ten distinct criteria, each measuring a different dimension of life together.

The 10-porutham system is one of the most thorough compatibility frameworks in any astrological tradition. Each porutham examines a specific aspect of the relationship: day-to-day harmony, temperament alignment, emotional resonance, physical compatibility, longevity and prosperity, and the well-being of each partner. Together they form a comprehensive picture of how two horoscopes interact over a lifetime.

A full match — where all 10 poruthams are satisfied — is considered rare and exceptionally auspicious. In practice, astrologers look for a minimum threshold (typically 6 out of 10) and pay particular attention to the most critical poruthams, especially Rajju, which is considered non-negotiable in many traditions.

The calculation is based entirely on the birth Nakshatra of each person and, for some checks, their Rasi (Moon sign). This means the results are objective and astronomical — every astrologer using the same birth data will arrive at the same porutham scores.
